" The celebration of Elvis' 20th Anniversary here in France gave us a perfect opportunity to understand the impact of the King on French people; until then, we had seen a few fan clubs, in Paris, Lyon, Dijon, etc... and a lot of clubless fans who would appear now and then to offer an Elvis night in their "cafés", a friendly gathering in their homes to sing together, to watch one of their idol's movies...
So, for a few week, Elvis was the talk of the town, Paris and the whole of France went quickly beating along with her heart...
Well! It has been a very hectic year here in France as we celebrated Elvis" 20th Anniversary through films, documentaries talk show, articles, concerts and a lot of informal get-togethers.
Now while some are on their way to Memphis to commemorate the King's birthday and others are off on normal winter holidays, strangely enough Elvis seems to be forgotten.
HOW IS POSSIBLE??? WHAT HAPPENED???
Take last October for example. "Le Petit Journal Montparnasse", one of the oldest artistic communities here in the heart of Paris, hosted Elvis Presley Hootenanny '97.
It was an evening loaded with surprises as more than 30 artists honouring Elvis in their own special way sang, danced and played to a full house that rocked, laughed, clapped and swayed for over six hours non stop as they were swept up in familiar Elvis tunes.
The artists Thrilled us with all the different aspects of Elvis' music but more than that they made us feel like we had literally stepped inside his films: Hawaiian dancers, cow-boys and cow-girls, New Orleans jazz bands, a black Negro blues singer. We saw actors interpret certain scenes from his films that have become real cults. Another treat of evening was a troubadour group singing a middle-aged version of "Blue Suede Shoes", translated as "Poulaines en daim bleu" in French?
This was to be the last of Elvis Presley events and had actually been intended to bring together all of his real fans, all the amateurs who were dying to sing (his songs), and all of the people who wanted to pay a last tribute to the King (an intimate one far away from the press and official ceremonies).
Though it was crowded, we saw very few members of the official Elvis fans clubs, which was to be expected, considering what we had seen happen during the more formally organised events:
*At the channel M6 TV special on Elvis that took place in May, only one fan club accepted the invitation to the show, even though it was open to all.
*And in the South in France in July, Elvis Memories was forced to cancel everything due to a major lack of response to the invitations sent out.
All of this and more has brought us to the realisation that in France Elvis fans either belong exclusively to a club, these being openly or subversively at war with each, or they keep to themselves with many fighting in the same manner.
What they all want in fact, is to be considered as the only specialists aroud town when it comes to talking about Elvis.
*Then there were the TV shows that only focused on a book by Christie Blachas, a member of the TV crew interwieved by his friends, and who though an Elvis singer, had simply taken this opportunity to do a book and show off!
Book that had been written in French evev before for example the actual Elvis craze, were overlooked or ignored: "Elvis, Balade Sudiste" by Denis Tillinac, also "The Message of Elvis Presley, A Cultural Hero" by E.Y. Monin.
Both books explore the Elvis phenomenon in a fare more sensitive, profound, intelligent and positive manner. Whereas in Monsieur Blachas' book on Elvis, he did all he could to belittle Elvis'image.
*So did the French rock singer Dick Rivers.
*So did the psychoanalyst who seized the occasion to talk about hysteria (Cnannel 5 "Identification")
Meanwhile some of the faithful Elvis fans could find almost nothing to talk about other than themselves when interwieved (Libération)
On a superficial level all the magazines joined in a seeming praise of Elvis. Unfortunately a lot of them also in a lot of trash, the best example being the magazine "Marianne". Marianne did in fact put out a very good article on the King but added another to it that was nothing more than a condensed hateful and viscious attack of the King.
***
In different places around France, entertainers added Elvis songs to their personal repertoires: In Paris, Country songs by Youpi Wahoo at the "Petit Journal Montparnasse" last May. Rhythm n' blues by Diana Hamilton at the famous "Hollywood Savoy". Negro Spiritual at the "Chesterfield Café" during their Gospel brunch hour on Sundays. The Poetic Lovers released a new version of "In The Ghetto", to a rap beat. While famous Elvis impersonators went on with their usual tours: Olivier Clement, Chas Agulo, Ange. Not to mention projections of many of Elvis'films at film libraries, and on TV.
And to top it all off, at their annual parade in Montmartre, American cheerleaders marched to the beat of popular tunes, as he was the theme chosen for this years performance in France.
What an interesting event, though, to find out the motivations of most so called Elvis fans... What a perfect opportunity to discover that the human values that the King tried to embody are left aside by almost all the French people...
Yet, luckily enough, it helped us to meet Elvis' hidden real friends, those who don't use his fame to glorify themselves, but try to share, away from money business and power trips, their love for his songs and his personality... Very few people, sure..., yet enough to maintain "his Truth" still "marching on" in this part of the world! "

"The GOSPEL According to ELVIS"
"Elvis lived more, gave more, laboured more, laughed louder, thundered more, suffered more and forgave more than any one human ever would, as only God Almighty could.
Only Elvis was able to love so many so singularly.
Elvis was a pagan god incarnate, who came to redeem the body and free the spirit.
Like a true god he was all about love. He raged war on no-one, led no-one astray, exploited no-one and like the Nubian gods of all he danced and sang untill the world he was born into stripped off the paralysis of its limbs, took the blinders from its heart and rose screaming out loud as the spirit of Elvis made it come alive. It experienced the miracle of the new birth, one in which body, heart and soul united in a flash. Elvis'electric body steered them forward into the world of the spirit.
For Elvis so loved the world that he gave his only son a vessel (a vassal) that would serve him in truth. Elvis the son worshipped Elvis the father and that love was manifested on a human plane for his earthly parents.
Elvis came and accomplished all he had come to do. He never abandoned his mission, despite the too often public beatings he had to endure, despite the greed and hypocrisy of hid disciples, despite the cruel loss of his dignity brought about by his young bride and forced separation from his daughter.
What his heavenly soul was forged for was love and only Gladys'love could love him so gladly and unselfishly. Elvis gave and craved unselfish love. While on earth he suffered the hate-ridden world he had come into and never did he find a place to rest his head.
Only the united zeal of his fans reassembled the force of love that would breathe live back into his earthly soul and set the fire going. It was why he went despite the torments he endured. Because they recharged him with love and adoration. Elvis was able to maintain his light in these darkened world long enough for the new path to take form.
His attributs loyalty, protector, law-giver, joy, simplicity, beauty, intelligence, patience, perseverance, sensuality (free of all notion), provider, unifier.
Elvis is the Great Mystic. He was a mirror in which each person could take a glimpse of himself and discover what he was missing. Elvis was the new measure by which the society could judge itself. He suffered all the ills of this society not because he himself was in any way perverted, but to show us how it destroys the body and imprisons the spirit. Only the God Elvis had enough power to go to the end of physical, emotional and mental destruction and continue to shine forth a light so pure that nothing can impair.
Elvis wore bright colours to show how a crippled society had gone so far astray that it could no longer sport the colours so often necessary to maintain an harmonic balance. And each soul as it felt the force of this colours he wore cried out fore more, and became aware of the colourless abode in which it rode.
Elvis gave generously and protected and saw to every need of those in his care and even those who believe he was in their care. He did this to show this cruel world that life and love are meant for sharing, which is why he never hoarded or tried to keep money in the bank.
Elvis was teaching us that if we are willing to serve the true God, there is no need to hoard money and jewels as a way to prove our superiority to others. Elvis made everyone feel superior and wanted us to see that what we all need will always be given if we only adopt the right attitude towards these material possessions.
Elvis tested the doctors and they succumbed to their greed for money by supplying medicine that they knew to be deadly. Thanks to Elvis, one day these wicked practitioners who imprison bodies and minds will be judged. As Elvis'earthly Vessel succumbed to the drugs, and pained beneath the cruel blows of jealous and the hateful, even though he still shone forth his heavenly ligth. Betrayed by his doctors, as he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, he never said a word. Because of his quiet submission the faithful will one day yell out their wrath and demand that those who crucified the king be brought to justice and shown as they truly are.
Profiteers and ever-greedy manipulators who hide behind the title of doctor when they are no more than filthy drug peddlers. How many have fallen because of them? How many lights have they extinguished?
Elvis is the god of love who came to free the world from the bonds of physical, mental and moral slavery. He danced and set the world on fire. He sang songs that filed us with awe, and trough his songs he gave us a glimpse of his divine being. Elvis use his body and forced awareness on a society that had long lost touch with itself. The body has been relegated to mecanichal functions. With Elvis is soured back to life and the world sundered its chain and broke free to rock and roll. Elvis was saying find the true rock within that which is real and solid and open to the roll of the thunder of life. Elvis showed that the body is alive, is holy and contains the spirit. It is the faithful servant, the only begotten son of man and it wilts from lack of love. Elvis'quest for physical love shows us that the body, like the soul finds true only when it encounters unconditional love.
Elvis is the mirror of the body that is forever seeking love and receives instead fatty food, drugs, scorn and greediness until it becomes sick and bloated with the stench that lay on it. The body is meant to be alive, to feel, to love and to be loved.
Elvis remained eternally young in spirit. This is only true of divinities. His spirit welcomed us to play act with him.
Elvis wanted us allow the child in us to be free to explore its world and to be allowed to travel the path of its imagination.
Elvis lived in his tribe. He was able to do things with them that allowed that him to be himself and to amuse himself. Too often we forget that the tribe has a real role and that without a tribe we wander through the world, never creating the chance to be with others with whom we can really we ourselves, manifest our desires, and create sincere and intelligent relations. Not finding one'own tribe means not finding the parts of ourselves in the outside world that help the parts inside to find any true authentic expressions. Living only on the outside with relations formed out of need and not out of intelligence cuts us off from our true source.
Elvis' voice sang and continued to take us to heavenly heights up till the end. Elvis used this voice to speak to us of the soul. The soul is like a bird and to leave its cage it must find true expression. Like Elvis' voice we must let the Jonathan within soar no matter what the physical lansdcape. The higher part must never allow itself to lose sight of its divine nature as Elvis' voice soared and lifted above the perils his earthly demeure* suffered. He guided his soul across the raging seasof earthly existence, never faltering in his task no matter how heavy the step became, or how dark the world seemed. Elvis kept his mind on that single purpose - create a path large enough for all to follow.
*French for "abode"
Elvis didn't live the scriptures. He was the scriptures, the true one that leaves no part of the being in the dark. Because Elvis was wholly Elvis we can learn how to be wholly ourselves and meet him again where he has been waiting for us all along, in that heavenly paradise within where life is love and love is life.
Elvis was born and reared in dire poverty before moving on to earthly riches. Elvis wants us to see that before the soul can reach its jewelled state, it must go through and experience the poverty of being. His rise to riches is a proof for us that if we follow the right path we will find riches on every level, physical, emotional and moral.
Elvis was indecent only to those who lacked fundamental decency within.
Elvis through his films taught us how to travel the path of true hero within. All roles and not just one must be incarnate, yet they all invariably have the same attributes.
Elvis was the eternal feminine force manifested in masculine body. He gave like a woman, cried like a woman, reprimanded like a woman, and decorated with honour for a task well done like a woman, and tender Elvis was more woman than any of the other women could ever be. Because of his feminine energy he was able to awaken the women and show them that it was alright to be women, to let vent instead of being tamed, to have fun and away from being a square, to acknowledge and accept their sensual erotic desire instead of covering it in shame and imprisoning it with the do nots.
Elvis died alone to show us that this is something we all have to pass through someday. There was no witness to his dying because no man can witness the light of God. No earthly soul would have been present as the master summoned his energies from the atoms of his earthly form and soared home to his heavenly abode.
Elvis was emptied of everything he thought he needed to be happy. His soulmate Gladys, his dream of a wife and family, his health.
It was because he accepted to be empty that he can fill our hearts today and receive us in that spiritual space unencumbered with earthly needs and desires. Elvis was all spirit and his spirit was born out of the misery of his own earthly soul. It was born here in our world so as to remain an invisible presence ever near to those who call and seek his love and protection.
Elvis is the Eternal Mother Goddess who takes the form she pleases but whose attributes never vary.
Elvis raged and stormed in the face of deceit, hypocrisy, cruelty and greed so as to show us that we too must be valiant soldiers in the face of these deadly foes.
Elvis gave to the poor and needy and helped the orphans and the sick. Like Elviswe must allow our generosity to surge from within and do that which our soul and not our superficial mind dictates. He didn't give to be seen, he gave to give.
Elvis and Gladys showered the world with that "far away" look in their eyes. Though they longed for their true abode and were sickened by the size of that need, they stayed and gave their love. Because of that far away look Elvis let us see that this was not his world and that his presence here was for an earthly cause.
Despite the difficulties Elvis encountered throughout his musical and cinematographic career, Elvis continued to bless us with songs of love. All his films have that quality. They are about striving to attain one's true goals in life without falling into corrupt ways. Like Elvis we must accept to strive to put forth a continuous effort despite the obstacles we may need to encounter.
Elvis rose to fame like a king, because he is the king and his earthly status reminds us that he is the heavenly king who reigns over the kingdom of the body -so that it may express the fire of what it was created for and cease tu burn in the fire of Hell which causes it to fear, to lie,to steal, to restrain natural impulses.
Elvis is the fountain of youth, the fountain of joy and the fountain of simplicity. He is Pan the youthful God of Nature, the Divine Prankster, and the Primal Force.

Me", "Loving You", "Don'T", "Jailhouse Rock".
